Gigahood Fiber

What Is Gigabit Internet and How Fast Is It?

TSC’s Gigahood fiber broadband connection is an internet service that offers a connection speed of 1 gigabit per second (Gbps), 1,000 megabits per second (Mbps) or 1 million kilobits per second (Kbps).

With much faster speeds, it is a breeze to handle things like:

  • Streaming video (4k)
  • Video games
  • Immersive media
  • Multiple users
  • Data backup
  • Large file downloads
  • Group video conference hosting
  • Smart home devices

The earliest dial-up internet users would have been lucky to achieve speeds of 56 Kbps. So, something that can be downloaded in seconds or minutes with gigabit internet might have taken hours or days with a dial-up connection.

Gigahood Fiber-to-the-Home Construction has Started!

If you’ve noticed TSC crews in your neighborhood, that means work has begun to bring our Gigahood fiber network to your community.

Complete our fiber Connect Me form and get your house ready for the Gigahood. Still not sure? Completing this form in no way obligates you to take TSC’s service.

How Much Speed Do I Need?

A Good Rule of Thumb!

The average person needs about 100 Mbps of download speed to easily cover streaming, gaming, and internet browsing all at the same time.

For many people online these days, the internet speed you need completely depends on what you do on the internet and how many people access it at the same time.

So while 100 Mbps is a good download speed for you, you may need 250 Mbps download speeds or even faster if you share your Wi-Fi with other users.

This is especially true if you want the smoothest, highest-quality experience possible while streaming, gaming, or working from home. Let our high-speed fiber work for you!

Are you in the Gigahood?

What can you do with different internet speeds?

The need for internet speed is changing rapidly. As providers upgrade to offer faster speeds, including fiber, developers improve their products to take advantage.  What might be a good speed today, may not be tomorrow. Don’t forget, many of us once thought we were doing well on our 56k modem! Here’s a quick look at what you can do with various speeds and bandwidth commonly offered by internet service providers (ISPs).

Internet Speed Number of Users Activities
100 Mbps
1-2
Casual web browsing, heavy text-based social media, light video-based social media, streaming HD video on 1–3 devices, making video calls, light gaming.
250 Mbps
3-4
Streaming 4K video on 2–3 devices, online multiplayer gaming, making video calls on 3 or more devices, operating 3–5 smart-home products.
500 Mbps
5-6
Streaming HD or 4K video on 4–5 devices, posting video content regularly to social media, operating 6–8 smart-home products.
1000 Mbps
7+
Streaming HD or 4K video on 5 or more devices, hosting a livestream, VR gaming, operating 9 or more smart-home products.

The more people using your internet, the more speed, or Mbps, you need to keep everyone happy. Don’t just count how many people in your house use the internet, also include your frequent friends.

Do you have Wi-Fi enabled appliances? A security system? Cameras? All of these are using your internet as well.

Need by Activity

What do you do when you’re online? Do you game? Watch Streaming TV? Stream music on Spotify?

Each of these activities needs different speeds—otherwise you’ll run into laggy internet or choppy video.

Activity Average Speed (per device/stream)
Streaming SD video (480p)
5-10 Mbps
Streaming HD video (1080p)
10-25 Mbps
Streaming 4K video (2160p)
25-100 Mbps
Streaming music
1-10 Mbps
Gaming
10-20 Mbps (per gamer)
Downloading large files (HD movies, PDFs, etc.)
Up to 50 Mbps
Checking email and social media
1-10 Mbps

Broadband Math

We still recommend 100 Mbps per person; however, as a minimum, give each person who uses the internet in your home 50 Mbps. And for every device, you can allot 10 Mbps. (25 Mbps if it’s a 4K device)

Let’s see how those speeds add up with an example using our minimum requirements.

In this example, we have a home with 4 residents that all use the internet.

  • People: 50 Mbps x 4 = 200 Mbps
  • Desktop computer: 10 Mbps x 2 = 20 Mbps
  • Laptop: 10 Mbps
  • Tablet: 10 Mbps
  • Smart phone: 10 Mbps x 3 = 30 Mbps
  • Smart TV (4K): 25 Mbps x 2 = 50 Mbps
  • Xbox/PlayStation: 10 Mbps
  • Wi-Fi printer: 10 Mbps
  • Home security system: 10 Mbps
  • Security cameras: 10 Mbps x 2 = 20 Mbps

Total: 370 Mbps

This recommendation assumes that every person and every wireless device is online at the same time.

Even though it’s not a definitive answer, adding up the speeds needed for the people and devices using your internet gives you a good estimate on your need for internet speed.
